The GlenDronach 12 Year Old Original Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky, 70cl bottle

New in the Vault: The GlenDronach 12 Year Old

There's a particular kind of hush that falls over a whisky shelf when a GlenDronach bottle goes up — the sherried stuff has a reputation, and the 12 Year Old earns every bit of it. We've just brought this Highland classic into The Amber Vault, and it's exactly the dram we reach for when the clocks go back and the nights start closing in early.

The GlenDronach 12 Year Old Original Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky, 70cl bottle

GlenDronach has been distilling at Forgue, in the Aberdeenshire Highlands, since 1826, and its signature move has never changed: proper Spanish sherry casks, no shortcuts. The 12 Year Old spends its life in a marriage of Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso casks, which is where all that colour and weight comes from — this is a whisky with real depth, not one merely wearing sherry as an accessory.

Pour a glass and the nose opens with sherried autumn fruit, chocolate praline and a warm thread of gingerbread. On the palate it's caramelised bramble and silky orange, sultana sweetness wrapped around a backbone of warming spice, and it holds that flavour right through a long, satisfying finish. Bottled at 43% ABV with natural colour, it's an honest, old-school sherry bomb — the kind of whisky that doesn't need water, ice, or an occasion to justify pouring it.

That said, it makes a lovely occasion whisky too. A bottle of The GlenDronach 12 is a properly thoughtful gift for anyone who already loves a sherried single malt, or a generous way to mark a birthday, an anniversary, or simply the first proper cold snap of the season. It's equally at home opened for a quiet dram by the fire or poured out for guests at the end of a dinner — there's a reason this one has become a core expression people keep coming back to.

We've only brought in a small run, so if you've been meaning to try a GlenDronach, now's the moment.
