At 40% ABV in a 70cl bottle, The Kraken Black Roast Coffee Rum is dark, opaque and aimed at those who like their spiced rum with a bitter-sweet roasted edge rather than extra sweetness.

About the brand

Kraken is a Caribbean spiced rum brand launched in 2010 and owned by Proximo Spirits. The original Black Spiced Rum is known for its dark colour and its octopus-themed bottle, and the brand has since added a series of flavoured variations, of which this coffee expression is one.

How it’s made

The base is Kraken’s spiced Caribbean rum, flavoured with Arabica coffee. The aim is for the dark, rich taste of coffee to balance the spice in the rum, rather than to sit on top of it. The result is a black, opaque spirit bottled at 40% ABV.

Tasting notes

Nose: roasted coffee beans, caramel, toffee and spice, with hints of vanilla.

Palate: cinnamon, vanilla and nutmeg alongside bold coffee flavour, with a rich, velvety texture.

Finish: warm, spicy and long, with lingering toffee.

How to enjoy it

The Kraken Black Roast Coffee Rum suits an Espresso Rumtini, made with the rum, cold-pressed coffee and sugar syrup and garnished with cinnamon and coffee beans.
