A Sherry-Cask Sibling: Isle of Harris "The Hearach" Oloroso Cask Matured
Share
Isle of Harris Distillery only released its first single malt a few years back, and already it has found room for a sibling expression. The Hearach Oloroso Cask Matured takes the same salt-kissed new make distilled in Tarbert, Outer Hebrides — the first legal distillery ever built on Harris — and sends it down a different road: first-fill Oloroso sherry butts, sourced from Bodega José y Miguel Martín in Jerez, Spain, rather than the trio of casks used in the original Hearach.
That single-minded cask choice changes the whole character of the dram. Where the standard Hearach leans on ex-bourbon alongside its sherry, this Oloroso-only expression goes all in on dried-fruit richness from the start. Pour a glass and cinnamon, orange peel and cloves arrive first, with gentle green herbal notes and a creamy thread of white chocolate underneath. On the palate it turns smokier and more savoury than you might expect from a sherry cask whisky — wood smoke and walnut shells, dried thyme, burnt orange and vanilla pod — before settling into a long finish of leather and liquorice. Bottled at 46% ABV, non-chill filtered and with no added colouring, it is an honest, uncut expression of what Oloroso oak and Hebridean sea air can do together.
This is very much a limited release rather than a standing bottle in the range, and it shows: production is small, and once a run sells through, it is not simply reordered. We are down to our last two bottles here at The Amber Vault, which makes it a genuinely good one to move on quickly if island whisky with real sherry depth is your kind of thing.
It is also a lovely gift for anyone who already owns a bottle of the original Hearach and is curious what the same spirit does in a different cask — or for a sherry-bomb lover who has not yet discovered that Harris makes whisky as well as gin. Pour it neat, give it a few minutes to open, and let the orange-and-clove nose do the introductions.
