Admiral Rodney HMS Formidable Rum, 70cl

Admiral Rodney HMS Formidable is a rare Saint Lucia rum and the most mature bottling in the Admiral Rodney range, blended from molasses rums aged for between nine and twelve years in ex-bourbon casks. Named after Admiral Rodney’s flagship at the Battle of the Saints in 1782, it is an oaky, rich sipping rum with honey, raisin and spice, bottled at 40% ABV.

About the distillery

Saint Lucia Distillers sits in the Roseau Valley near Castries and is the last remaining rum distillery on the island. It was formed in 1972, when the Barnard family, who had distilled at Dennery since 1932, joined forces with Geest and moved production to the Roseau distillery. It also makes the well-regarded Chairman’s Reserve rums.

How it’s made

HMS Formidable is distilled from molasses in a Coffey column still and aged in American white oak casks that previously held bourbon. The distillery’s team blends rums between nine and twelve years old, which gives the bottling extra depth and structure compared with the younger expressions in the range.

Tasting notes

• Nose: Honeyed raisin fruit, spices and vanilla, with oak, dark chocolate and nutmeg.
• Palate: Sweet sultana fruit balanced by toasty oak, with cinnamon, cacao and leaf tobacco.
• Finish: Long and warming, with sweet spices.

How to enjoy it

Admiral Rodney HMS Formidable deserves to be sipped neat in a tulip or snifter glass, with a few drops of water if you like. A single large ice cube also works well. It pairs nicely with dark chocolate, roasted nuts, a mature cheese or a good cigar.
