Admiral Rodney HMS Princessa Rum, 70cl

Admiral Rodney HMS Princessa is a mature, sweet-leaning sipping rum from Saint Lucia, blended from rums aged between five and nine years in casks that previously held bourbon. The Admiral Rodney range celebrates Admiral George Rodney’s victory over the French at the Battle of the Saints in 1782, and each rum is named after a ship that distinguished itself in that battle – here, HMS Princessa.

About the distillery

Saint Lucia Distillers sits in the Roseau Valley near Castries and is the last remaining rum distillery on the island. It was formed in 1972, when the Barnard family, who had distilled at Dennery since 1932, joined forces with Geest and moved production to the Roseau distillery. It also makes the well-regarded Chairman’s Reserve rums.

How it’s made

HMS Princessa is a molasses rum distilled in a Coffey column still. Rums aged for five to nine years in ex-bourbon casks are then blended by the distillery’s team to create a rounded, oak-framed rum with plenty of sweetness.

Tasting notes

• Nose: Honeyed raisins with a hint of vanilla and tobacco.
• Palate: Sweet, with intense brown sugar and crème brûlée, balanced by dry, toasty oak.
• Finish: Complex and well integrated, with caramel and tropical spice.

How to enjoy it

Admiral Rodney HMS Princessa is best enjoyed neat or over a single large ice cube in a tumbler, where its brown sugar and oak can be savoured slowly. It also makes a rich, characterful Rum Old Fashioned, and it pairs well with dark chocolate, roasted nuts or a slice of rich fruit cake after dinner.
