Admiral Rodney HMS Royal Oak Rum, 70cl

Admiral Rodney HMS Royal Oak is an extra old Saint Lucia rum, blended from molasses rums aged for between seven and twelve years in ex-bourbon casks. The Admiral Rodney range commemorates the Battle of the Saints in 1782, and each bottling is named after a ship in Admiral Rodney’s fleet. HMS Royal Oak is a smooth, layered sipping rum with dried fruit, chocolate and toasty oak, bottled at 40% ABV.

About the distillery

Saint Lucia Distillers sits in the Roseau Valley near Castries and is the last remaining rum distillery on the island. It was formed in 1972, when the Barnard family, who had distilled at Dennery since 1932, joined forces with Geest and moved production to the Roseau distillery. It also makes the well-regarded Chairman’s Reserve rums.

How it’s made

The rum is distilled from molasses in a Coffey still, then aged exclusively in used American white oak bourbon casks. Distillates between seven and twelve years old are blended together, giving a rounded Saint Lucia rum with the weight and depth of a long-matured spirit.

Tasting notes

• Nose: Prunes and raisins with toasty oak and tropical spices.
• Palate: Sweet sultana fruit, tobacco and chocolate, with vanilla from the oak.
• Finish: Sweet fruit, caramel and spice.

How to enjoy it

Admiral Rodney HMS Royal Oak is at its best neat or over a single large ice cube in a tumbler, which lets the dried fruit and oak unfold slowly. It also suits a rich Rum Old Fashioned, and pairs well with dark chocolate desserts, dried fruit or nut pastries.
