Badachro Storm Strength Gin, 70cl

Badachro Storm Strength Gin is the high-strength sibling of Badachro Gin, a navy-strength Highland gin bottled at 57% ABV. Made in small batches on the Wester Ross coast, it keeps the floral, herbaceous character of the original while adding extra weight and juniper spice. It was first made with cocktails in mind, and the strength helps its botanicals carry through a Negroni or a Martini as well as a long drink.

About the distillery

Badachro Distillery is a small, artisan distillery at Aird Hill in the hamlet of Badachro, near Gairloch in Wester Ross, in the north west Highlands. It was started by Gordon and Vanessa, and local botanicals are hand-picked around the coast and hills. The distillery sits close to the 57° North line of latitude, which inspired the Storm Strength name.

How it’s made

The gin is distilled in small batches in a copper pot still named Delilah, using pure Scottish water and handpicked botanicals, herbs and spices. The recipe includes juniper, rose hip petals, lavender, gorse blossom, elderflower, coriander, wild myrtle, liquorice and citrus. The 57% strength matches the traditional navy-strength benchmark.

Tasting notes

• Nose: Aromatic and led by juniper and myrtle, with rosehip and elderflower.
• Palate: Herbaceous myrtle opens, followed by sweet rosehip and elderflower, then liquorice and coriander, with a touch of spearmint sweetness and powerful juniper spice.
• Finish: Sweet lavender and citrus.

How to enjoy it

Badachro Storm Strength Gin works well in a gin and tonic, where the strength keeps the botanicals clear as the ice melts. It is also suited to a Negroni or a gin Martini. Serve it in a large glass over plenty of ice, and add a little water or tonic if you prefer a softer pour.
