Balcones Texas Rye 100 Proof Whiskey, 70cl

Balcones Texas Rye 100 Proof is a pot distilled rye whiskey from Waco, Texas, made from a mash of 100% rye and bottled at 50% ABV. Its Texas-grown Elbon rye is combined with crystal, chocolate and roasted rye, and the copper pot stills give it a full-bodied character. About the distillery

Balcones began in 2008 as an idea to make something original and authentic in the heart of Texas. The team converted an old welding shop under a bridge in Waco, replacing the roof, laying brick and installing copper pot stills from Portugal. Distilling began in 2009, and the distillery has become known for its Texas whiskies.

How it’s made

The 100% rye mash bill uses Elbon rye from Northwest Texas, together with crystal, chocolate and roasted rye. The mash is distilled in copper pot stills, a method that produces a full-bodied style of rye whiskey. It is bottled at 100 proof, which is 50% ABV.

Tasting notes

• Palate: Cocoa and a pinch of tobacco, with melted dark chocolate, orange zest, coffee and honeyed malt, finishing with just a hint of char.

How to enjoy it

Balcones Texas Rye 100 Proof is rewarding neat, with a few drops of water to soften the strength and bring out the chocolate and orange. Its spice and body also suit classic rye cocktails such as an Old Fashioned, a Manhattan or a Sazerac.
