The Smoky Ten BenRiach The Smoky Ten 10 Year Old is a Speyside single malt Scotch whisky that shows the darker, peatier side of a distillery better known for fruity, unpeated malts. It marries peated and unpeated spirit, then matures the result in three different cask types, giving a sweet, fruit-led dram with a thread of gentle smoke running through it.

About the distillery

BenRiach was founded in 1898 and sits in the north of Speyside. The distillery is known for its eclectic mix of casks from around the world and for working in three spirit styles: classic, peated and triple distilled. The Smoky Ten is bottled by BenRiach and carries the name of master blender Rachel Barrie on the label.

How it’s made

The malted barley is smoked with Highland peat, and the peated and unpeated spirits are combined. Each component is matured for at least ten years in ex-bourbon barrels, Jamaican rum casks and toasted virgin oak, then vatted together. The label describes it as three cask matured, and it is bottled at 46% ABV.

Tasting notes

• Nose: Syrupy ripe orchard fruit, smoked honey glaze and a touch of oak spice.
• Palate: Smoked applewood, honey and maple, with spiced pear.
• Finish: A balanced finish of sweetness and smoke.

How to enjoy it

Pour it neat in a tulip-shaped glass to appreciate the interplay of fruit and smoke, and add a few drops of water if you would like to soften the 46% ABV. It also works well in an Old Fashioned or a Rob Roy, where the gentle peat adds depth, and pairs nicely with smoked cheese or grilled fruit.
