Benromach Contrasts: Unpeated is a Speyside single malt Scotch whisky that does something the distillery rarely does: it leaves the smoke out. Distilled in 2014 and bottled in 2024 at 46% ABV, it is made from unpeated barley and matured for nine years in first-fill sherry and bourbon casks. The result is a sweet, fruity Speyside single malt that shows Benromach’s spirit without its usual peat.

About the distillery

Benromach was built in 1898 in Forres, near Elgin, in Speyside. The Urquhart family acquired it in 1993, and it is now owned by Gordon & MacPhail, the family-owned spirits company based in Elgin. Prince Charles reopened the distillery in 1998. Whisky is made by hand, with two bespoke copper pot stills used for double distillation.

How it’s made

The Contrasts range explores how barley, peat and casks change the Benromach style. This release uses 100% unpeated barley and is matured for nine years in first-fill sherry and bourbon casks. It is bottled at 46% ABV with natural colour and without chill filtration.

Tasting notes

• Nose: Sweet vanilla fudge and malted biscuit, with spiced baked apple, fresh lime, floral notes and ginger.
• Palate: Candied pineapple leads to red apple, raspberry and raisin, with sweet liquorice, oak and subtle herbal notes.
• Finish: Medium in length, with fresh menthol and a touch of pepper.

How to enjoy it

Serve Benromach Contrasts: Unpeated neat in a tulip glass, with a splash of water if you like. It is a good option for anyone who enjoys Speyside single malt but prefers fruit and spice to smoke, and it pairs well with orchard fruit tarts or mature cheese.
