About the brand

Black Bull was established in 1864 by George Willsher in his Dundee shop. Today the brand belongs to Duncan Taylor, the family-owned Scotch whisky specialist that began life in 1938 as a cask broker and trading company. Its devotion to good casks is a hallmark of the company, and Black Bull is its range of bold, higher-strength blends.

How it’s made

The starting point is the Black Bull Kyloe blend, the brand’s bold 50% ABV blend. It is then finished in ex-Caribbean rum casks, a step that layers brown sugar, coconut and tropical fruit over the underlying malt. The whisky is bottled at 50% ABV.

Tasting notes

• Nose: Toasted coconut and oak, ripe tropical fruit, vanilla and a dusting of powdered sugar.
• Palate: Biscuity malt and rich brown sugar, with candied citrus and a cool herbal note of mint underneath.
• Finish: Marzipan, toasted nuts and oaky vanilla, with orchard fruit, a little pepper, marmalade and a hint of ginger.

How to enjoy it

Black Bull Kyloe Rum Finish takes a little water well, which softens the spice and brings out the sweetness. It is equally at home over ice or in a long drink with ginger ale, and it makes a lively twist on an Old Fashioned. Try it with spiced fruit cake or mature cheddar.
