Black Bull Kyloe Sherry Cask Finish Blended Scotch Whisky, 70cl

Black Bull Kyloe Sherry Cask Finish is a blended Scotch whisky that takes the bold Kyloe blend and finishes it in sherry casks. Bottled at 50% ABV, in keeping with the brand’s “100 Proof” heritage, it adds soft sherry richness, dried and stewed fruit and gingerbread spice to the malty, full-bodied Kyloe character, making an approachable sherried blended Scotch whisky at full strength.

About the brand

Black Bull was established in 1864 by George Willsher in his Dundee shop, and the brand is now looked after by Duncan Taylor, the independent Scotch whisky company based in Huntly. The label names Black Bull Whisky Co. of Huntly as the blender and bottler. Kyloe, named after the Highland cattle breed, is the core of the range, and the Sherry Finish is one of its newer members.

How it’s made

Black Bull Kyloe Sherry Cask Finish starts with the Kyloe blend of malt and grain whiskies. That blend is then finished in ex-Pedro Ximénez and oloroso sherry casks, which give the whisky extra depth and a fruity, sweet character. It is bottled at 50% ABV.

Tasting notes

• Nose: Soft sherry, orchard blossom and gentle herbs, with boiled sweets, pear drops, milk chocolate and toasted oak.
• Palate: Stewed plums and red apples, dark honey sweetness, a hint of leather and a spicy, dry oak.
• Finish: Long, with gingerbread spice balanced by creamy vanilla.

How to enjoy it

Try Black Bull Kyloe Sherry Cask Finish neat in a tulip-shaped glass, adding a few drops of water to ease the 50% strength and release the fruit. It also stands up to ice, and its sherried sweetness works well in an Old Fashioned or a Rob Roy.
