Cairngorm Mountain Strength Gin, 70cl

Cairngorm Mountain Strength Gin is a bold, juniper-forward Scottish Highland gin bottled at 54% ABV. It is a stronger expression of the Cairngorm Gin Company’s signature gin, blending juniper, cloudberries, elderflower and Caledonian pine with coriander seed, orris root, sweet orange peel, angelica and kaffir lime. Each bottle carries a handwritten bottle number, batch code and year of production.

About the distillery

The Cairngorm Gin Company was established in 2019 by Jack Smith, who was born and raised in the Scottish Highlands. It is based in Aviemore, beneath the Cairngorms, and makes its gin in small batches, with water from the River Spey. Its original copper pot still is named Ginger, after Jack’s late grandfather.

How it’s made

A blend of neutral grain spirit and Speyside water is loaded into the still, with the botanicals packed in muslin bags and submerged directly in the spirit. The stills are heated slowly, the heads are discarded and only the hearts are kept. After resting in stainless steel, the gin is reduced with River Spey water and bottled and labelled by hand.

Tasting notes

• Nose: Intense and complex, with vibrant citrus and juniper giving way to freshly cut heather and wildflowers.
• Palate: Tangy lemon and lime sherbet with bright pine notes, earthy spice and a tingling minerality.
• Finish: Bold and persistent, with crushed spruce, spice and lime zest, turning long, dry and refreshing.

How to enjoy it

At 54% ABV, Cairngorm Mountain Strength Gin rewards a little care. Mix it long with a light tonic and a twist of lime or lemon, or use it in a Negroni, Martini or Gimlet where a stronger gin keeps its shape. If you want to taste it neat, add a few drops of water to soften the heat.
