Caol Ila Moch Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky, 70cl

Caol Ila Moch is an Islay single malt Scotch whisky bottled by the distillery at 43% ABV. Moch is the Gaelic word for “dawn”, and the whisky is lighter and fresher than the distillery’s well-known 12 Year Old. It was the first Caol Ila single malt chosen for its taste rather than for its age, cask wood, strength or finish. The result is a soft, clean Islay single malt Scotch whisky with lemon, toffee and a gentle, drying smoke.

About the distillery

Caol Ila has called the Isle of Islay home since 1846. The distillery stands near the village of Port Askaig on the island’s eastern shore, looking across the Sound of Islay towards Jura. It is owned by Diageo and is known for producing both peated and unpeated single malt, with the peated style carrying Islay’s signature smoky character.

How it’s made

Moch is a Caol Ila single malt selected on flavour alone, so it carries no age statement. The aim is a lighter, sweeter and fresher expression that still shows the distillery’s coastal and smoky character, bottled at 43% ABV.

Tasting notes

• Nose: Creamy and lemony, with vanilla ice cream, pineapple, white pepper and a hint of smoke.
• Palate: Silky and medium-bodied, with buttery toffee and a clear peaty character.
• Finish: Dry and sooty, with toffee and vanilla lingering, medium to long in length.

How to enjoy it

Caol Ila Moch is a good introduction to Islay whisky. Enjoy it neat in a tulip glass, or add a little water to open up the fruit. It also suits a long, cold highball with soda. Try it alongside smoked salmon or a mature cheddar.
