About the brand

Cargo Cult is a South Pacific spiced rum brand that joined the Sydney Rum Distillery portfolio, which the company calls its House of Australian rum, when it was acquired in 2022. The rums are blended, spiced and bottled in Orange, New South Wales, using aged rum from distilleries in Papua New Guinea’s Ramu River Valley and on the island of Fiji.

How it’s made

The base is aged rum from Papua New Guinea and Fiji, matured for up to three years in ex-bourbon barrels according to retailer information. It is then blended and spiced in Australia with clove, cardamom, ginger, vanilla and cinnamon. No added sugar is reported, which is why this rum comes across as unusually dry for the style.

It also works with cola, apple juice or coconut water, and its dry character keeps spiced rum cocktails from turning cloying. It is also pleasant neat over ice in a short tumbler.
