Clément XO Rhum Vieux Agricole, 70cl

Clément XO is a Martinique rhum vieux agricole aged for a minimum of six years and bottled at 42% ABV. Made from fresh sugar cane juice, this XO Rhum Vieux Agricole has reached what the producer calls a lovely maturity, with good balance and complexity. Mahogany in colour, it shows dried fruit, spice and toasted oak, and is best treated as a sipping rum.

About the distillery

Homère Clément bought the Domaine de l’Acajou on Martinique in 1887, and the family name was given to the rhum in 1944. Clément is produced at the Habitation Clément in Le François, under the Martinique AOC, which sets strict rules for agricole production. The estate’s ageing cellars still sit on the same site.

How it’s made

The rhum is distilled from fresh sugar cane juice in a traditional column still. The XO is aged for at least six years in oak, in red bourbon barrels blended with new American oak barrels, before blending. The result is a rich, soft and elegant aged agricole.

Tasting notes

• Nose: Dried fruits, dates, Agen prunes and cinnamon, with a hint of smoke, caramel and fresh sugar cane.
• Palate: Rich, soft and elegant, with ripe fruit, chocolate and tobacco, and charred oak balanced by the natural sweetness of the cane.
• Finish: Long and warm, with toasted wood.

How to enjoy it

Clément XO is made for sipping neat in a tulip glass or with a single large cube of ice. The producer suggests serving it alongside a skewer of fresh fruit such as melon, pineapple and watermelon. It also pairs well with dark chocolate.
