Clynelish distillery sits on Scotland's rugged east coast in Brora, Sutherland, and was built in 1967/68 alongside the original Clynelish distillery (established 1819), which was subsequently renamed Brora and closed in 1983. The new distillery inherited its predecessor's distinctive waxy, coastal spirit character and remains a favourite among blenders for its unmistakable style.
The 14 Year Old flagship expression is matured for a minimum of fourteen years, largely in refill American oak casks, allowing the distillery's signature texture and coastal salinity to remain at the fore rather than being overtaken by wood.
The nose is delicately complex and perfumed, with spicy, floral and malty hints joined by zesty mandarin and tangerine and a whisper of smoke. The palate is light yet multi-layered, offering citrus over a honeyed background with soft acidity, dry oak, mixed orchard fruits and a touch of leather.
The finish is long, developing honeyed sweetness with a trace of sea brine and spicy oak. Prized by whisky enthusiasts for its distinctive waxy mouthfeel, this is a sophisticated coastal Highland malt with real depth.
