Colombo Navy Strength Gin, 70cl

Colombo Navy Strength Gin is a high-strength gin built on a Sri Lankan recipe. Bottled at 57% ABV, it follows the botanical blend of the original Colombo London Dry Gin, with extra curry leaf for added spice. The result is a bold, savoury and warming gin, with candied ginger and peppery coriander in the mix, and it holds its character in cocktails where a lighter gin would be lost. The label calls it a single batch Ration Navy Dry Gin.

About the brand

Colombo gin comes from the Rockland Distilleries story. Rockland was founded in 1924 by Carl de Silva Wijeyeratne and is described as Sri Lanka’s first commercial distillery. His grandson Amal Wijeyeratne rebuilt the business after the 2004 tsunami and relaunched the gin as Colombo No. 7 in 2015, working from the original family recipe found in the archives.

How it’s made

The Colombo recipe combines juniper, coriander, angelica and liquorice with Sri Lankan cinnamon, ginger and curry leaf. The Navy Strength version keeps that profile and adds extra curry leaf. It is handcrafted in small batches, and the label states that it is distilled and bottled in England.

How to enjoy it

Colombo Navy Strength Gin suits stirred and short drinks. Try it in a Negroni, where the spice stands up to Campari and vermouth, or in a Gimlet or a Gin and Tonic with a strip of lime peel. A little water or a large ice cube will open it up if you prefer to sip it.
