Don Q Gold Rum, 70cl

Don Q Gold Rum is a classic golden Puerto Rican rum from Destilería Serrallés, blended from molasses rums aged between about eighteen months and five years. It sits between the clean, light Don Q Cristal and the richer aged expressions, with more flavour than the white rum but the same easy-going character. This is a versatile gold rum at 40% ABV, equally at home in cocktails and long drinks.

About the producer

Destilería Serrallés is based at the Hacienda Mercedita in Ponce, on Puerto Rico’s south coast. The Serrallés family began making rum there in 1865, when Juan Serrallés Colón imported a still from France, and the same distillery has been in use for over a century. The Don Q brand was launched in 1932 and is now the company’s flagship.

How it’s made

Don Q Gold is made by multiple column distillation, in a process similar to that used for Don Q Cristal. The rum is matured in American white oak barrels to round out the spirit, then lightly carbon filtered to remove impurities while keeping its flavour.

Tasting notes

• Nose: Faintly herbal, with sweet apple and pear and a touch of dried raisin.
• Palate: Pineapple, peppercorn and vanilla, with a subtle warm oakiness.
• Finish: Warm spice, with cinnamon and peppercorn.

How to enjoy it

Don Q Gold is a flexible rum for the home bar. Use it in a Daiquiri, a Mai Tai or a Rum Punch, or serve it as a long drink with cola or ginger beer and a wedge of lime. It is also smooth enough to sip over ice.
