Downpour Sloe & Bramble Gin, 70cl

Downpour Sloe & Bramble Gin is a sloe gin liqueur from North Uist Distillery in the Outer Hebrides. Sloe berries and Uist brambles are added to Downpour Scottish Dry Gin, and the result is aged in bourbon casks, giving a sloe and bramble gin with a rich, fruity flavour and a touch of toasted oak beside its Hebridean heather and citrus heritage.

About the distillery

North Uist Distillery Co. was founded by Jonny Ingledew and Kate MacDonald, both North Uist natives who returned to the island to make artisan spirits. The distillery, based at Nunton Steadings in the Outer Hebrides, released Downpour Scottish Dry Gin as its first spirit in 2019, distilling, bottling and labelling on the island.

How it’s made

The base is Downpour Scottish Dry Gin, a juniper-led gin flavoured with wild Hebridean heather and citrus. Sloe berries and brambles from Uist are added to it, and the liqueur is then matured in bourbon casks. It is bottled at 31% ABV.

Tasting notes

• Nose: Dark sloe and ripe bramble fruit, with a hint of toasted oak.
• Palate: Rich and deep, with bramble and red berry flavours supported by toasted oak from the bourbon casks.
• Finish: Fruity and lingering, with gentle oak warmth.

How to enjoy it

Serve Downpour Sloe & Bramble Gin over plenty of ice with a premium tonic, garnished with heather, raspberries and brambles, as the distillery suggests. It is equally good served neat in a small glass after dinner, or with a splash of sparkling wine.
