Gin Bothy Original Gin, 70cl

Gin Bothy Original Gin is the signature small-batch gin from Gin Bothy, handmade in Angus, Scotland. It pairs classic juniper with distinctly Scottish botanicals – Scots pine needles, heather, milk thistle and hawthorn – for a savoury, forest-fresh Scottish gin with a gentle sweetness and a lift of citrus. It is also the base for the brand’s range of fruit liqueurs, yet very much a gin in its own right.

About the brand

Gin Bothy grew out of jam. In 2013 founder Kim Cameron was making traditional jams from locally sourced fruit at the Jam Bothy, in the grounds of an Angus coffee shop, and winning a ‘World Jampionship’ award. The leftover fruit juices were mixed with gin on her mum’s suggestion, and the Jam Bothy became the Gin Bothy, now home to a range of handcrafted Scottish spirits.

How it’s made

The gin is distilled with a blend of botanicals including juniper, Scots pine needles, heather, milk thistle, hawthorn, marshmallow root, rosemary, lemon and orange. It is made in batches of around 300 bottles, and each bottle is hand-numbered. It won two stars at the Great Taste Awards 2017.

Tasting notes

• Nose: Juniper up front, with fresh pine and a herbal, heathery edge.
• Palate: Robust and refreshing; juniper leads with pine behind it, and milk thistle and citrus bring a balancing sweetness mid-palate.
• Finish: Clean, savoury and refreshing.

How to enjoy it

Serve Gin Bothy Original Gin over plenty of ice with a good-quality tonic, garnished with a slice of orange or a sprig of rosemary – simple, Scottish and refreshing. It also suits a classic dry Martini, where its savoury pine character can shine, and makes a thoughtful gift for gin lovers.
