Made with heather-rich Highland peat and finished in sherry casks, it pairs sweet, floral smoke with toffee and dark fruit, offering a Lowland take on peated Scotch whisky.

About the distillery

The Glasgow Distillery Co. is based in Hillington, in south-west Glasgow, and began production in 2015. Its first single malt was released in 2018. The 1770 name refers to Glasgow’s first distillery, built at Dundashill in 1770. The distillery uses water from Loch Katrine in the Trossachs.

How it’s made

The malted barley is smoked using heather-rich peat from the Scottish Highlands and distilled slowly in traditional copper pot stills. The spirit is matured in virgin oak, then finished in Pedro Ximénez sherry casks. It is bottled non-chill filtered and without added colour, at 46% ABV.

Tasting notes

• Nose: Sweet, floral smoke with toffee, vanilla, dried dark fruit, black pepper and a hint of flamed orange.
• Palate: Rich toffee and dark fruits, with tobacco leaf, dried apricot and cacao nibs behind soft, sweet peat.
• Finish: Long and smooth, with salted caramel, liquorice and lingering spice.

How to enjoy it

Glasgow Distillery 1770 Peated is best sipped neat or with a little water to open up the sherry sweetness behind the smoke. It makes a good base for a smoky Old Fashioned, and it pairs well with dark chocolate, roasted nuts or mature cheddar.
