Glencadam 14 Year Old Bordeaux Barrique Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky, 70cl

Glencadam 14 Year Old Bordeaux Barrique is a limited single cask Highland single malt Scotch whisky from the Glencadam distillery in Brechin, Angus. Distilled in 2008 and bottled in October 2022, it was matured for around fourteen years in a Bordeaux barrique and bottled at a cask strength of 60% ABV, with natural colour and no chill filtration. Only 261 bottles were drawn from the cask.

About the distillery

Glencadam was founded in 1825 by George Cooper in the burgh of Brechin and has been owned by Angus Dundee Distillers since 2003. It is a compact distillery with one wash still and one spirit still, both shaped to encourage reflux, and it makes an unpeated spirit with a floral, pear-drop character.

How it’s made

This bottling comes from a single Bordeaux barrique, a French wine cask, in which the whisky matured from 2008 until October 2022. It is an official distillery bottling, presented at full cask strength, uncoloured and unfiltered by chilling, so that the cask’s influence is shown as it is.

Tasting notes

• Nose: Red berries, sea buckthorn and sour cherry, with warm spices of cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger.
• Palate: Black Forest cake and biscuit, black pepper, baking spice, tobacco, raspberry preserve and toasted oak.
• Finish: Cherry chocolate liqueur and black coffee, giving way to cocoa, blackberry compote and cedar.

How to enjoy it

At 60% ABV, Glencadam 14 Year Old Bordeaux Barrique rewards a slow approach. Pour a small measure into a tulip-shaped glass and add water a few drops at a time to open up the red fruit. It pairs well with dark chocolate or a mature hard cheese.
