Harrogate Gooseberry Gin, 50cl

Harrogate Gooseberry Gin is a flavoured gin from Harrogate Tipple, distilled at Ripley Castle Estate in North Yorkshire. Made with Yorkshire gooseberries picked from the distillery’s own bush, it is a sweet, floral and gently tart gin bottled at 43% ABV in a 50cl bottle. A touch of garden sorrel root gives it a distinctive green hue, and it is finished with Harrogate Spring Water.

About the distillery

Harrogate Tipple moved to Ripley Castle Estate near Harrogate in 2018, building on the Ingilby family’s long association with the estate, where alcohol was once made on site. The distillery, shop and Gin School sit in the castle grounds, and the team handles everything in-house from sourcing botanicals to bottling, using copper stills named Zac and Cassie.

How it’s made

Yorkshire gooseberries are distilled with lavender and other delicate botanicals, with garden sorrel roots adding the green colour and character. The gin is finished exclusively with Harrogate Spring Water, giving a balanced, fruit-led gin at 43% ABV.

Tasting notes

• Nose: Bright, tart gooseberry with a suggestion of red apple.
• Palate: Earthy juniper with light spice, then lavender, vanilla, angelica and orange peel as it develops, balanced by sweet, juicy fruit.
• Finish: Sweet floral notes, in keeping with the producer’s description of the gin.

How to enjoy it

The producer suggests pairing Harrogate Gooseberry Gin with a light or floral tonic, and a gooseberry gin and tonic is the obvious serve. Use a large glass with plenty of ice and a slice of lemon or a sprig of lavender. It also works neat over ice as a slow sipper.
