Hell's Stone Blended Whisky, 70cl
Hell's Stone Blended Whisky, 70cl
Hell’s Stone Blended Whisky is a Cornish whisky from Pocketful of Stones Distillery in Penzance, bottled at 40% ABV. Rather than coming from Scotland, it is an English whisky made from craft beer that is distilled in a handmade copper pot still and matured in used oak barrels close to St Michael’s Mount. The result is a smooth, vanilla-led dram with a gentle coastal freshness.
About the distillery
Pocketful of Stones Distillers Ltd is based at Causeway Head in Penzance, Cornwall, and has been distilling for around a decade. Its whiskies are named after local legend: the story goes that a red-hot boulder dropped by a dragon fighting St Michael fell near Helston, giving the place its name, Hell’s Stone.
How it’s made
The process begins with brewing a craft beer, which is then distilled in a handmade copper pot still called Jackson. The young whisky is aged in used oak barrels in the shadow of St Michael’s Mount, where the angel’s share is lost to the Cornish air. The producer does not publish the exact composition of the blend.
Tasting notes
- Nose: Honeyed grain with a slight hint of caramel.
- Palate: Smooth and fresh, with vanilla and almond and a very slight touch of marzipan.
- Finish: Lingering vanilla.
How to enjoy it
Hell’s Stone is smooth enough to sip neat from a tulip-shaped whisky glass, and a few drops of water can open up its honeyed, vanilla character. It also suits an Old Fashioned or a simple highball with ginger ale.
