Hendrick's Absinthe, 70cl

Hendrick’s Absinthe is a colourless absinthe from the makers of Hendrick’s Gin, bottled at 48% ABV. It pairs the classic absinthe botanicals of wormwood and star anise with the brand’s signature rose and cucumber, giving a spirit that is lighter and more approachable than many traditional absinthes. Its clear appearance also makes it a versatile base for cocktails, and it will appeal to gin drinkers curious about aniseed-led spirits.

About the brand

Hendrick’s is made at the Hendrick’s Gin Palace in Girvan, Scotland, by William Grant & Sons, and the gin itself has been produced since 1999. The absinthe grew out of experiments by master distiller Leslie Gracie, who applied the brand’s taste for the unexpected to a style that is rarely associated with gin makers.

How it’s made

The recipe combines wormwood and star anise with juniper, yarrow, elderflower, neroli oil, orange distillate and Hendrick’s own rose and cucumber botanicals. Unlike many absinthes it is clear rather than green, and it turns cloudy more gently than traditional bottlings when water is added.

Tasting notes

• Nose: Earthy, woody wormwood with star anise, citrus, spice and a hint of summer flowers.
• Palate: Aniseed and neroli lead, followed by yarrow, elderflower, rose petals and a touch of citrus.
• Finish: Dry and aniseed-led, with a lingering, gently bitter wormwood note.

How to enjoy it

Prepare it in the traditional way by pouring a measure over a sugar cube and adding about three parts ice-cold water. It also works in a Death in the Afternoon, a julep, or a Martini made with gin and dry vermouth. Dark chocolate and orange make good partners.
