Hrafn Valkyrie London Dry Gin is a contemporary Scottish London Dry gin from Hrafn Gin, bottled at 43% ABV. Where Thought & Memory leans on mandarin, Valkyrie is built around jara, an aromatic citrus fruit that gives the gin a bright, zesty lift. The makers describe it as beautifully smooth, with a lighter, sparkling style that suits a long drink without losing the depth of a pot-distilled spirit.

About the brand

Hrafn Gin is made by Raven Spirits Ltd, a company founded by brothers Callum and Peter Sim from Aberdeenshire. The name is the Old Norse word for raven. They set out to make gins with whisky-like depth of flavour, a long finish and enough smoothness to enjoy neat, on ice or with a drop of water. Valkyrie takes its name from the Norse mythological choosers of the fallen.

How it’s made

Valkyrie is distilled in a pot still with slow, gradual heating, which allows each botanical to come through clearly. The botanicals are juniper berries, fresh jara peel, coriander seeds, cassia bark, cubeb pepper and angelica root. It won a Master medal at the Gin Masters 2021.

Tasting notes

• Nose: Fresh green juniper with bright lemon and lime citrus.
• Palate: Juniper leads into spiced citrus, with lime and sparkling lemon, delicate and smooth.
• Finish: Soft, citrus-led and spiced, with lingering cinnamon.

How to enjoy it

The producer suggests a gin and tonic with a light tonic and a lime twist, or a wedge of jara fruit if you can find one. It also suits an Alaska cocktail. Serve in a large glass with plenty of ice, and it is smooth enough to try neat or with a little water.
