With its unmistakable green glass bottle and stag emblem, Jägermeister is one of the world's most recognisable herbal liqueurs. This deep amber-brown spirit from Germany blends 56 herbs, roots, blossoms and fruits into a single, distinctive recipe.
The nose is intensely herbal and citrusy, giving way to a palate that's spiced and sweet, layered with candied orange peel, nutmeg and a touch of pepper. The finish lingers, peppery and fruity in equal measure. Traditionally served ice-cold as a shot, Jägermeister also works well over ice, mixed with cola, or as the base of a Jägerbomb.
Jägermeister was created by Curt Mast, who took over his family's Wolfenbüttel-based vinegar and wine business — trading since 1878 — and spent years perfecting the herbal blend before launching it onto the German market in the 1930s. Production remains in Wolfenbüttel, Lower Saxony, to this day, and the stag on the label references the legend of Saint Hubertus, patron saint of hunters.
