Kaiken Ultra Malbec, Mendoza, Argentina

Kaiken Ultra Malbec is the premium expression from Kaiken, the Mendoza winery founded by Chilean winemaker Aurelio Montes. The grapes are sourced from a trio of high-altitude vineyard sites in the Uco Valley – Los Chacayes, Altamira and Gualtallary, planted between 1,200 and 1,400 metres above sea level – where cool nights and intense sunlight concentrate flavour and build structure in the fruit.

In the glass it shows an intense ruby-red colour with violet hues, leading into a perfumed nose of dark purple fruit and violets. The palate is smooth and silky, with rounded, well-integrated tannins carrying flavours of blackberry and raspberry through to a long, persistent finish with a subtle hint of liquorice. Aged in French oak, it's a polished, food-friendly Malbec that pairs beautifully with red meat and grilled dishes.
