Kopke Fine White Port, Douro, Portugal, 75cl
Kopke Fine White Port, Douro, Portugal, 75cl
Kopke Fine White Port is a smooth, aromatic white Port from the Douro Valley in Portugal. A blend of white grape wines, it balances gentle sweetness with freshness, and it works well served chilled on its own or lengthened with tonic and a slice of citrus. It is a versatile aperitif with silky texture and notes of nuts, citrus and spice.
About the producer
Kopke traces its history to 1636, when Nicolau Kopke moved from Hamburg to Portugal as Consul General of the Hanseatic League. The house shipped its first wines in 1638 and is widely described as the oldest Port house. In 1922 it acquired Quinta de São Luiz in the Douro, which has been central to its winemaking since.
How it’s made
The grapes are hand-picked, destemmed and crushed, then fermented in stainless steel at 16–18°C until the desired sweetness is reached. Grape brandy is added to fortify the wine. The blend is matured for a minimum of three years in wooden and stainless steel vats before bottling.
Tasting notes
- Nose: Citrus and spice with subtle oak, alongside tropical fruit and floral notes.
- Palate: Silky and rounded, with lemon zest, tropical dried fruit, almond and caramelised nuts.
- Finish: Fairly dry, with a note of citrus peel.
How to enjoy it
Serve Kopke Fine White Port chilled, at around 8–10°C. It makes a refreshing aperitif and a good alternative to a gin and tonic: pour over ice, add tonic water and a slice of orange or lemon. It also pairs well with salads, fruit, cheeses such as Stilton, and crème brûlée.
