Marqués de Murrieta Reserva Rioja, Spain, 75cl

Marqués de Murrieta Reserva is a classic Rioja Reserva from one of the most historic estates in Rioja Alta. Grown on the Ygay estate that surrounds the winery and aged for two years in American oak, it is a Tempranillo-led red of real depth and elegance, combining bright red fruit with gentle spice, silky tannins and the fresh acidity that helps the best Rioja age so gracefully.

About the producer

Marqués de Murrieta was founded in 1852 and is renowned for wines of depth, longevity and classical elegance, including the celebrated Castillo Ygay. The 300-hectare Ygay estate lies at the southern tip of Rioja Alta, with vineyards between 320 and 485 metres above sea level, giving a range of microclimates that adds layers of flavour and aroma to the fruit.

How it’s made

After de-stemming, the grapes ferment for eight to ten days in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, with gentle pump-overs and punching down to draw out colour and aroma without harsh tannin. Pressing takes place in traditional vertical presses, and the wine then spends 24 months in 225-litre American oak barrels.

• Nose: Strawberry, cherry and red plum, layered with black pepper, sandalwood, Mediterranean herbs and a delicate note of red tea.
• Palate: Silky tannins, lifted by fresh, lively acidity that brings elegance and precision.
• Finish: Long, graceful and well defined.

How to enjoy it

Serve Marqués de Murrieta Reserva at around 16–18°C in a large red wine glass; it benefits from being opened a little while before the meal. It is a natural partner for roast lamb, slow-cooked beef, game and hard Spanish cheeses such as Manchego.
