Mateus Original Rosé is a Portuguese rosé wine in the distinctive rounded flask that has carried the Mateus name since 1942. Lightly fruity and gently fresh, with a soft hint of fizz on the finish, this 11% ABV bottling is made to be easy to enjoy, whether as an aperitif or alongside a relaxed meal.

About the producer

Mateus is made by Sogrape Vinhos, a Portuguese wine company founded in 1942 by Fernando van Zeller Guedes. Mateus Rosé was the company’s first major international success. Sogrape remains family owned today and farms extensive vineyards of its own.

How it’s made

The blend draws on Touriga Franca, Baga, Rufete and Tinta Barroca. The wine is vinified in the manner of a white, without the skins, and fermented slowly in stainless steel at a controlled 16°C. It then rests for around two months on fine lees before being fined, cold stabilised, filtered and bottled.

Tasting notes

  • Nose: Fresh and inviting, with an intense, youthful bouquet of red fruit.
  • Palate: Well balanced and harmonious, with a gentle sweetness and refreshing acidity.
  • Finish: Soft and slightly fizzy, clean and easy-drinking.

How to enjoy it

Serve Mateus Original Rosé well chilled, at around 6–8°C, in a standard white wine glass. It works nicely as an aperitif and pairs well with salads, grilled dishes, white meat, fish and seafood, as well as lightly spiced Asian dishes such as sushi.
