Matusalem Platino Rum, 70cl

Matusalem Platino is a crystal-clear white rum from the Dominican Republic, bottled at 40% ABV. A blend aged for around three years and made in the solera tradition, it keeps a little of the character that ageing brings while staying light, dry and clean. That balance makes Matusalem Platino Rum a dependable base for classic rum cocktails as well as a smooth, easy-going long drink.

About the brand

Matusalem traces its roots to Santiago de Cuba, where the house was founded in 1872 by the Camp brothers. The name nods to the biblical Methuselah and his famous longevity. After the family left Cuba, production moved to the Dominican Republic, where the rums are still made today using the solera method that has defined the brand for generations.

How it’s made

Platino is triple distilled and then aged for three years as part of the Matusalem solera, in which younger and older rums are blended together in stages. The rum is then filtered for clarity, leaving it crystal clear with a soft, polished character rather than the heaviness of darker styles.

Tasting notes

• Nose: Demerara sugar, fudge and toffee, with a subtle hint of cinnamon.
• Palate: Gently sweet, with fudge and toffee flavours and a dusting of cracked black pepper.
• Finish: Light and clean, with lightly spiced roasted coconut, vanilla and almond.

How to enjoy it

This white rum was made with cocktails in mind. Use it in a daiquiri, a mojito or a Cuba Libre, or keep things simple with soda and a squeeze of lime over plenty of ice. It also works well chilled and served over ice with a twist of citrus.
