Mentzendorff Kümmel Liqueur, 50cl
Mentzendorff Kümmel Liqueur, 50cl
Mentzendorff Kümmel is a caraway-flavoured liqueur with its roots in the Baltic, bottled at 38% ABV in a 50cl bottle. Sweet yet savoury, with aniseed, liquorice and cumin notes, this kümmel liqueur is traditionally served well chilled after a meal as a digestif, and the label itself carries the instruction that it should be served cold.
About the brand
Kümmel was first made in 1823, when Baron von Blanckenhagen founded the Allasch distillery near Riga, then part of the Russian Empire. In 1850 he asked his Riga merchant, Ludwig Mentzendorff, to represent the liqueur in Britain, and Mentzendorff began trading in London in 1851. The brand is still marketed by Mentzendorff & Co.
How it’s made
Today the liqueur is made under contract by the Combier distillery in France’s Loire Valley, an arrangement in place since 1985. Caraway seeds are macerated overnight in a pot still with neutral alcohol and water, the spirit is distilled twice, and the liqueur then rests for two months before bottling.
Tasting notes
- Nose: Caraway, the signature flavour of kümmel.
- Palate: Sweet, with aniseed, liquorice and cumin notes.
How to enjoy it
Serve Mentzendorff Kümmel well chilled, either neat in a small glass or over ice, as a digestif after dinner. The liqueur has a long association with golfers, who nicknamed it the “putting mixture”, and it can also be used in cocktails that call for a caraway note.
