About the distillery

Michter’s is one of the best-known names in American whiskey, based in Louisville, Kentucky. The brand’s US*1 range nods to what many call the first whiskey company in America, and its labels carry a heritage date of 1753. Today the whiskeys are made and bottled in Kentucky in deliberately small quantities, with each bottling drawn from a limited number of barrels.

How it’s made

The bourbon is blended in small batches, with no more than around two dozen barrels going into any one batch. Keeping the batch size low means a weak barrel has nowhere to hide, so each one has to earn its place in the final blend before it is bottled at 45.7% ABV.

Tasting notes

• Nose: Vanilla, caramel and milk chocolate, with buttered corn and a touch of sweet oak char.
• Palate: Buttery caramel and soft peach and apricot, with nutmeg and a gentle peppery warmth softened by chocolate and oaky vanilla.
• Finish: Long and fruity, with stone fruit, a hint of apple, chocolate and honeyed almonds.

How to enjoy it

Sip Michter’s US*1 Small Batch Bourbon neat, or over one large ice cube to let the caramel and fruit open up. It also works well in a classic Old Fashioned. For food, try grilled steak, barbecue ribs or a dark chocolate pudding.
