Nikka Tailored Japanese Blended Whisky, 70cl

Nikka Tailored is a premium blended whisky from Nikka, built around malt whisky from the Yoichi and Miyagikyo distilleries and grain whisky from Nikka’s Coffey still. Bottled at 43% ABV in a distinctive square decanter-style bottle, it is designed for balance, roundness and softness, with fruit, honey and gentle toasted notes running through the blend.

About the distillery

Nikka was founded in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru, who studied whisky making in Scotland before returning to Japan. The company now works from two distilleries: Yoichi on the northern island of Hokkaidō, and Miyagikyo in the hills of Honshū. Each has its own character, and Nikka’s blenders combine them with grain whisky to create its blended styles.

How it’s made

Yoichi malt is distilled in pot stills heated by direct coal fire, while Miyagikyo uses steam heating for a gentler, fruitier spirit. Nikka’s Coffey still supplies the grain whisky. Maturation takes place mainly in ex-American oak and ex-sherry casks, and the components are then blended by Nikka’s team for a rounded, soft result.

Tasting notes

• Nose: Apple, apricot and other white-fleshed fruits, with plenty of honey, a hint of chocolate and candied orange peel.
• Palate: Pastry-like vanilla sweetness set against dark chocolate and citrus zest, including tangerine and orange.
• Finish: Lightly toasted notes balance a fruity bitterness, ending on vanilla sweetness.

How to enjoy it

Nikka Tailored is suggested neat or over ice, which lets the fruit and honey come through without diluting the delicate sweetness. A small splash of water can open it further. Nikka suggests pairing it with flavoured chocolate, such as coffee or liquorice.
