Old Pulteney Huddart Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky, 70cl

Old Pulteney Huddart is a Highland single malt Scotch whisky from Wick, on the far north-east coast of Scotland, finished in casks that previously held heavily peated whisky. The result adds a soft, driftwood-like smoke to the distillery’s honeyed, maritime style, and makes Huddart a gentle introduction to smoky single malt.

About the distillery

Old Pulteney was established in 1826 in Pulteneytown, the harbour district of Wick in Caithness, and calls its whisky The Maritime Malt for its salty, coastal character. Huddart is named after the street the distillery stands on, which honours Captain Joseph Huddart, a hydrographer who provided charts for the British Fisheries Society, the builders of Pulteneytown and its harbour.

How it’s made

Huddart is first matured in second-fill American oak ex-bourbon casks, then finished in ex-bourbon casks that had previously held heavily peated whisky. This brings in gentle smoke without overwhelming the fruit and honey of the spirit. It carries no age statement and is bottled at 46% ABV.

Tasting notes

• Nose: Mellow wood smoke and honey, then crisp green apple, with creamy vanilla and treacle toffee.
• Palate: Spice and soft vanilla with gentle smoke, and sweet coastal brine developing into salted butterscotch.
• Finish: Long and warm, with lingering smoke.

How to enjoy it

Enjoy Old Pulteney Huddart neat, or with a few drops of water, which helps to bring out the smoke and the creamy toffee notes. It also makes a characterful smoky highball with soda and a twist of lemon.
