Peddlers Shanghai Craft Gin, 70cl

Peddlers Shanghai Craft Gin is a London Dry-style gin distilled and bottled in Shanghai, built from eleven botanicals gathered across Asia and Europe. Buddha’s Hand citrus, Sichuan pepper and lotus sit alongside classic juniper, giving a gin that is aromatic, lightly spiced and distinctly different from the usual London Dry. It comes in a squat green bottle with a handle and is bottled at 45.7% ABV in a 70cl size.

About the brand

Peddlers Gin Co. is based in Shanghai’s Huangpu District and takes its inspiration from the back streets of a great trading port, where ingredients and ideas have long arrived from all directions. The company has earned medals at the San Francisco World Spirits Awards and the CWSA, and the style is often described as an East-meets-West approach to gin.

How it’s made

Hungarian juniper from the north of the country is macerated for 12 hours in warm spirit, then combined with botanicals including lotus from Gansu, Sichuan pepper from Qingxi, East Asian mint and Buddha’s Hand from Yunnan, and liquorice from an organic farm in Guangdong. Angelica, Xinjiang almonds, cardamom, Chinese cassia and coriander complete the recipe.

Tasting notes

• Nose: Floral and citrusy, led by Buddha’s Hand and the perfume of Sichuan pepper.
• Palate: Warming Sichuan pepper, piney juniper and bright coriander, with herbal depth and a little sweetness from lotus and liquorice.
• Finish: Smooth and layered, with lingering citrus, spice and soft juniper.

How to enjoy it

A classic gin and tonic with plenty of ice and a twist of citrus shows off the spice and citrus well. The gin also suits a Negroni or Martini, and its peppery edge pairs naturally with spicy Szechuan dishes, dumplings or cold sesame noodles.
