Pokeno Origin is a New Zealand single malt whisky from the Pōkeno distillery, matured only in first-fill bourbon casks and bottled at 43% ABV. About the distillery

The Pōkeno Whisky Co. distils in Pōkeno, in the Waikato valley of New Zealand, at the foot of the Bombay Hills. The company says it uses only local ingredients, including spring water from the hills, and its small team of distillers focuses on single malts that reflect the culture and climate of Aotearoa New Zealand. The distillery distils, matures and bottles on site.

How it’s made

Origin is made from 100% malted barley, grown locally, and is matured only in first-fill bourbon casks. There is no age statement. The warm, humid New Zealand climate is cited by the distillery as well suited to maturing whisky, and the bourbon casks give the single malt its vanilla and spice character. It is bottled at 43% ABV.

Tasting notes

• Nose: Warm fudge, allspice and black pepper with a touch of lemon peel.
• Palate: Vanilla caramel, warm oak and cinnamon, with candied citrus.
• Finish: Brown sugar and peppery spice.

How to enjoy it

Pokeno Origin is easy to enjoy neat in a tulip glass, and a few drops of water open up the citrus and honey notes. It also suits a simple serve over ice, or a long highball with soda and a twist of lemon. A square of dark chocolate or a mild cheese makes a good match.
