Porter's Modern Classic Gin, 70cl

Porter’s Modern Classic Gin is a citrus-and-juniper Scottish gin from Aberdeen, bottled at 41.5% ABV. It is built around a cold-distilled botanical blend that puts bright citrus, including the unusual Buddha’s hand, beside a classic juniper core, warm pink pepper and cinnamon. The result is a clean, modern gin that works equally well in a long drink or a cocktail, and a good introduction to the Aberdeen gin scene.

About the distillery

Porter’s is an Aberdeen gin named after Professor Andrew Porter of Aberdeen University. It was created by a small team that includes Ben Iravani of Monkey Bars Aberdeen and Alex Lawrence, formerly of DandeLyan, and has been described as Aberdeen’s first gin in the last hundred years. The gin is listed under the Langstane distillery name and made in Scotland.

How it’s made

Porter’s Modern Classic Gin takes a two-part approach. Its delicate botanicals, including the citrus, are cold distilled under vacuum in a rotary evaporator, which preserves their fresh character. The remaining botanicals are distilled in a traditional copper pot still, and the two are brought together in the finished gin. Twelve botanicals are used, among them juniper, angelica, almond, coriander and liquorice.

Tasting notes

• Nose: Juniper-led and elegant, with an earthy depth and fresh citrus lifted by Buddha’s hand.
• Palate: Juniper sits at the core, with warm pink pepper, cinnamon and anise and a constant thread of citrus.
• Finish: Fairly clean, with a lingering sweet note of nutmeg.

How to enjoy it

Porter’s Modern Classic Gin is made for mixing. Serve it long with Indian tonic water over plenty of ice, garnished with a slice of lime or orange. Its citrus-bright, juniper-forward profile also suits a Gimlet or a classic Martini, and it holds up well in a Negroni.
