It is named after the old Dublin distillery where the Powers story began and shows the rich, spicy and fruity character of the single pot still style, with leather, dark fruit, creamy vanilla and a long, spicy finish.

About the brand

Powers traces its roots to 1791, when James Power, a Dublin innkeeper, converted his premises into a small distillery in John’s Lane, off Thomas Street. The business later became John Power & Son. Today the whiskey is made at the Midleton distillery in County Cork, which also produces Jameson, Paddy and Redbreast, and this bottling pays tribute to the original John’s Lane site.

How it’s made

This is a single pot still Irish whiskey, a style made from a mash of malted and unmalted barley distilled in pot stills. It has been matured for 12 years and is bottled at 46% ABV.

Tasting notes

• Nose: Leather, sandalwood and warm spice sit alongside dark fruit such as black cherry, with candied orange peel, dark chocolate and lightly toasted oak.
• Palate: Rich and creamy, with vanilla, cherries, dates and chocolate, then apricot and peach. The texture turns oily and the middle becomes more savoury, with winter spices and a touch of honey.
• Finish: Long and spicy, with sweetness, coffee and malted biscuit notes.

How to enjoy it

Powers John’s Lane Release is ideally sipped neat so the spicy pot still character can show. Add a few drops of water if you would like to open up the fruit and spice, and serve it at room temperature in a tulip or Glencairn-style glass.
