Tucked into the hillside below Balmoral Castle in the Eastern Highlands, Royal Lochnagar is one of Scotland's smallest distilleries — and one of its most storied. This 12 Year Old expression is the distillery's flagship single malt, matured for over a decade in oak casks to produce a soft, honeyed dram that punches well above its modest production numbers.
On the nose, expect a creamy, aromatic character with hints of hay, malted barley, oak and mixed peel. The palate brings soft smoke and gingerbread alongside toasty spice, Demerara sugar and boiled sweets, while the finish settles into notes of grass and honey — a sweet, summery dram from start to finish.
Royal Lochnagar earned its royal name after Queen Victoria and Prince Albert visited the distillery in 1848 during their stays at nearby Balmoral, granting it a Royal Warrant it holds to this day. Now part of Diageo's portfolio, the distillery still produces whisky on a small scale, making this 12 Year Old a rare taste of a genuinely historic corner of the Highlands.
