Russian Standard Original Vodka, 70cl
Russian Standard Original Vodka, 70cl
Russian Standard Original is a Russian wheat vodka bottled at 38% ABV and made in St Petersburg. Created in 1998 and launched in the UK in 2007, it is built around a simple idea: grain, soft water and careful filtration, with nothing added to disguise the spirit. The result is a clean, lightly sweet vodka that works as readily served ice cold as it does in a long drink or a classic martini.
About the producer
Russian Standard vodka was created in 1998 by Roustam Tariko and is made at the Livitz distillery on the outskirts of St Petersburg. The brand draws on an 1894 quality standard for Russian vodka associated with the chemist Dmitri Mendeleev, whose signature appears on the bottle, and it is distributed in the UK by Whyte & Mackay.
How it’s made
The vodka is distilled from Russian wheat and cut with soft water that originates from Lake Ladoga. It is then filtered through charcoal and through quartz crystal before bottling, a process intended to leave a smooth, neutral and pure-tasting spirit.
Tasting notes
- Nose: Clean and grainy, with wheat and a touch of white pepper.
- Palate: A gentle underlying sweetness reminiscent of white bread crust, with black pepper and a hint of aniseed.
- Finish: Peppery but clean.
How to enjoy it
Russian Standard Original is at its best well chilled: keep the bottle in the freezer and serve it neat in small glasses alongside smoked fish, pickles or rye bread. It also makes a crisp martini, and its clean character suits simple mixers such as tonic, soda or cranberry juice.
