Starward Left-Field Australian Single Malt Whisky, 70cl

Starward Left-Field is an Australian single malt whisky from Melbourne, bottled at 40% ABV and made to be approachable and versatile. Matured in French oak barrels that once held Australian red wine, it pairs soft tropical fruit with red berries and vanilla spice, and it has been deliberately crafted to work neat, mixed or shaken, so it suits both newcomers to single malt and seasoned drinkers.

About the distillery

Starward was founded by David Vitale in 2007 with the aim of making a distinctly Australian whisky in Melbourne. The first distillery was an old aircraft hangar at Essendon Fields, and the company now operates from Port Melbourne, a working distillery about ten minutes from the city centre. Its whiskies are made with Australian barley and matured in Australian wine barrels.

How it’s made

Left-Field brings together Australian barley and red wine barrels from the Barossa Valley and Yarra Valley. Only 100% French oak is used, which gives a rich, spicy mouthfeel and brings out the oak character while keeping the delicate wine flavours that have soaked into the wood.

Tasting notes

• Nose: Soft aromatics of tropical fruit, red apple skin, fresh red berries and warming vanilla spice.
• Palate: Estery, bright tropical fruit with a rich mouthfeel and lightly toasted oak.
• Finish: Delicate, with a soft tannic structure.

How to enjoy it

Starward Left-Field is happy served neat or with a little water, and it also stands up to ice. Its fruity, spicy character makes it a good base for an Old Fashioned or a Whisky Sour, and it sits comfortably alongside food at the dinner table.
