Stauning Rye Danish Rye Whisky, 70cl
Stauning Rye Danish Rye Whisky, 70cl
Stauning Rye Danish Rye Whisky, 70cl, is a 48% ABV rye whisky made in Skjern on Denmark’s west coast. Distilled from local Danish rye and barley and matured in new American oak, it brings freshly baked rye bread, dried fruit, ripe cherry and peppery oak, finishing long, sweet and fruity with a touch of pepper.
About the distillery
Stauning was founded in 2005 by a group of nine friends who were curious about whisky production. The distillery is on Denmark’s west coast, near Skjern, and makes its whisky from grain to glass using just grain, yeast and water. Malting and distillation both take place on site, and the spirit is run through small copper pot stills heated by direct fire.
How it’s made
The rye and barley are grown locally and floor-malted at the distillery. The spirit is double distilled in small direct-fired copper pot stills, then matured for around three to four years in new American oak barrels. It is bottled unfiltered, without chill-filtering, so a little natural haze or residue can appear.
Tasting notes
- Nose: Freshly baked rye bread and wine gums, with a hint of pepper.
- Palate: Dried fruit and ripe cherry, with peppery oak balanced by vanilla and a note of citrus peel.
- Finish: Long, smooth and sweet with fruity character and a peppery lift at the end.
How to enjoy it
Stauning Rye is well suited to sipping neat, where the bread-like rye character and fruit come through clearly. A small splash of water can soften the pepper if you prefer. Its spicy backbone also makes it a natural base for whisky cocktails such as an Old Fashioned.
