Yamazaki 12 Year Old is a Japanese single malt whisky from Suntory, bottled at 43% ABV and aged for a minimum of twelve years. It is the long-standing core expression from the Yamazaki distillery, launched in 1984, and it is often regarded as a benchmark for the style. Soft, fruity and gently spiced, this Japanese single malt whisky shows how a blend of cask types can build depth and balance.

About the distillery

Yamazaki was founded in 1923 by Shinjiro Torii in Shimamoto, Osaka Prefecture, and was opened as Japan’s first malt whisky distillery. It remains the home of Suntory’s malt whisky tradition. Its stillhouse holds six wash stills and six spirit stills, and the distillery has become one of the most recognised names in world whisky.

How it’s made

Yamazaki 12 Year Old is a single malt matured for at least twelve years in a mix of casks, including American oak, Spanish oak and Japanese Mizunara oak. Combining these woods gives the whisky its blend of fruit, sweetness and spice, along with a subtle incense-like quality associated with Mizunara.

Tasting notes

• Nose: Full-bodied, with nut oils, citrus zest and floral notes, alongside a little tropical fruit and a gentle earthy, rooty character.
• Palate: Smooth and soft with good sweetness and winter spice. Citrus develops, followed by more tropical fruit and a hint of rum.
• Finish: Medium in length, with lingering fruit and zest.

How to enjoy it

Yamazaki 12 Year Old is best enjoyed neat in a tulip-shaped nosing glass, with a few drops of water if you would like to open up the fruit. It also works well in a highball with soda water and a twist of citrus peel, or over a single large cube of ice.
