Tamdhu Batch Strength No. 8 is a limited-release Speyside single malt Scotch whisky bottled at 55.8% ABV. The eighth edition of the Batch Strength series, it is matured entirely in Oloroso sherry casks and bottled without chill filtration. It offers the full weight of cask-strength whisky, with the dark fruit and nutty depth that Tamdhu is known for.

About the distillery

Tamdhu is a Speyside distillery at Knockando, Moray, where the first spirit was distilled in 1897. After a period of closure, it was bought by Ian Macleod Distillers in 2011 and resumed production in 2013. The distillery has a reputation for whiskies matured exclusively in sherry-seasoned oak casks.

How it’s made

Batch Strength No. 8 is matured only in Oloroso sherry-seasoned casks sourced from Jerez in Spain, with a high proportion of first-fill casks. Selected casks are married together and bottled at natural cask strength, without chill filtration, so that the character of the sherry oak comes through undiluted.

Tasting notes

• Nose: Dark, nutty notes of Spanish oak, with creamy vanilla and honeycomb.
• Palate: Tart berries and candied citrus peel, with a hint of summer orchard fruit.
• Finish: Long and elegant, with sherry oak and lingering fig.

How to enjoy it

At 55.8% ABV, Tamdhu Batch Strength No. 8 is best approached with care. Try it neat first, then add a few drops of water to soften the strength and open up the berry and citrus notes. A tulip-shaped glass suits it well, and it pairs nicely with dark chocolate or a slice of fruitcake.
