The Botanist Islay Cask Rested Gin, 70cl

The Botanist Islay Cask Rested Gin is a 46% ABV gin from Bruichladdich Distillery on Islay, made with the same 22 hand-foraged island botanicals as The Botanist Islay Dry Gin and then rested in oak casks for at least six months. The time in wood adds a soft, viscous body, warming spice and dried fruit, while the herbal and juniper character of the original remains clearly present.

About the distillery

Bruichladdich Distillery is an Islay whisky producer, and The Botanist is its gin, built on botanicals gathered on the island. The Cask Rested expression draws on the distillery’s whisky-making heritage, using its warehouses on Islay and the Hebrides to mature the spirit in a wide selection of casks.

How it’s made

The gin starts from the 22 Islay botanicals used in the classic Botanist recipe. It is then rested for a minimum of six months in oak casks, with the brand citing around sixteen different types, among them ex-bourbon, red wine, sherry, Sauternes and virgin oak. The result is a blend, or cuvée, of rested gins.

Tasting notes

• Nose: Warming spices, candied citrus peel and perfumed juniper, with baking spice, oak and dried fruit.
• Palate: Soft and rounded, with a deep, viscous mouthfeel as cask influence meets the botanicals and wood spice.
• Finish: The oak fades to fresh herbal notes, juniper, coriander and citrus.

How to enjoy it

Sip The Botanist Islay Cask Rested Gin neat or over ice with a slice of orange to appreciate the cask character. It also suits stirred drinks: the brand suggests a simple mix of 50ml gin and 25ml amaro, served over ice with an orange twist. A tumbler suits it best.
