Wood’s Old Navy Rum, 70cl

Wood’s Old Navy Rum is a Guyanese dark rum in the Demerara tradition, bottled at 57% ABV, the strength historically associated with Navy rum. Known for many years as Wood’s 100, it blends pot-still and column-still spirit distilled from molasses, then ages the components in oak. The result is a bold, full-bodied rum with toffee, dark sugar and Christmas spice, strong enough to carry a cocktail yet rewarding when sipped.

About the brand

Wood’s dates its brand to 1887, when it was established by a Liverpool distribution company, and its makers say the blend has stayed true to that original Navy recipe. The rum is distilled at the Diamond Distillery in Guyana, home of Demerara Distillers, and the brand has been owned by William Grant & Sons since 2002.

How it’s made

The rum is made from molasses and distilled at Diamond Distillery. The blend includes spirit from a wooden pot still, described as one of the last working wooden stills in the world, alongside continuously distilled rum. The component rums are aged in oak for between one and a half and three years before blending.

Tasting notes

• Nose: Toffee, caramel and cinnamon, with prunes, Christmas pudding, dark chocolate, nutmeg and clove.
• Palate: Muscovado sugar, golden syrup and soft toffee, opening to fudge, dark chocolate and a touch of orange, with warming spice.
• Finish: Syrupy toffee and hot cinnamon, with a peppery lift from the alcohol.

How to enjoy it

Wood’s Old Navy Rum can be sipped neat or with a little water to soften the strength. Its depth and proof make it a good partner for ginger beer in a Dark ’n’ Stormy, or other rum-based cocktails, and it pairs well with dark chocolate or Christmas cake.
