Zagare Vermentino is a Sicilian white wine from the Terre Siciliane IGT, made from Vermentino grown close to the sea on the island’s west coast. Fresh, lemony and easy to drink, with stone fruit and a savoury edge, it is a bright, unoaked Italian white that works equally well as an aperitif or alongside light seafood dishes.

About the producer

Zagare is made by Adria Vini, a winemaking venture established in 2003 and jointly owned by the UK wine company Boutinot and the Piedmont co-operative Araldica Castelvero. The team oversees production from grape selection through to bottling, working with long-term growers and co-operatives across several Italian regions to make still and sparkling wines from local grape varieties.

How it’s made

The Vermentino comes from vineyards on Sicily’s west coast, where many vines face the sea and catch light reflected off the water. The wine is fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel, which keeps its aromas fresh, and then rests briefly on fine lees before bottling.

Tasting notes

• Nose: Ripe stone fruit, preserved lemon and blossom.
• Palate: Apricot, citrus peel and grapefruit pith, with fresh acidity and a touch of minerality.
• Finish: Mildly savoury.

How to enjoy it

Serve Zagare Vermentino well chilled in a standard white wine glass. It makes an easy aperitif or a partner for garden barbecues, and suits fish, seafood and simple pasta dishes, where its citrus freshness and gentle savoury finish come into their own.
